Context of 1 Samuel 2:10
8He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, placing them in seats of honor. For all the earth is the Lord’s, and he has set the world in order. 9“He will protect his faithful ones, but the wicked will disappear in darkness. No one will succeed by strength alone. Those who fight against the Lord will be shattered. He thunders against them from heaven; the Lord judges throughout the earth. He gives power to his king; he increases the strength of his anointed one.” 11Then Elkanah returned home to Ramah without Samuel. And the boy served the Lord by assisting Eli the priest. 12Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the Lord

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken - Those who contend with him, מריביו meribaiu, by sinning against his laws, opposing the progress of his word, or persecuting his people. Shall judge the ends on the earth - His empire shall be extended over all mankind by the preaching of the everlasting Gospel, for to this the afterpart of the verse seems to apply: He shall give strength unto his king, and shall exalt the horn of his Christ, or, as the Targum…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10He shall give strength - This is a most remarkable passage, containing a clear and distinct prophecy of the Kingdom and glory of the Christ of God. (Compare Luke 1:69-70).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10The king was to use his God-given power to help the oppressed, the hungry, and those unable to have children (see Psalm 72:1 4, 12–14; Proverbs 31:8–9). He will exalt the horn: See study note on 1 Samuel 2:1. His anointed (Hebrew mashiakh): This part of Hannah’s prayer predicts both Israel’s anointed kings and God’s ultimate Anointed King—the Messiah, Jesus Christ (see 1 Samuel 12:3–5; 24:6, 10; Psalm 132:17; Daniel 9:25–26).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth ... exalt the horn of his anointed--This is the first place in Scripture where the word "anointed," or Messiah, occurs; and as there was no king in Israel at the time, it seems the best interpretation to refer it to Christ. There is, indeed, a remarkable resemblance between the song of Hannah and that of Mary (Lu 1:46).Read the comment
