Context of 1 Chronicles 9:2
1So all Israel was listed in the genealogical records in The Book of the Kings of Israel. The people of Judah were exiled to Babylon because they were unfaithful to the Lord. The first of the exiles to return to their property in their former towns were priests, Levites, Temple servants, and other Israelites. 3Some of the people from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh came and settled in Jerusalem. 4One family that returned was that of Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, a descendant of Perez son of Judah.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2Now the first inhabitants - This is spoken of those who returned from the Babylonish captivity, and of the time in which they returned; for it is insinuated here that other persons afterwards settled at Jerusalem, though these mentioned here were the first on the return from the captivity. Properly speaking, the divisions mentioned in this verse constituted the whole of the Israelitish people, who were, ever since the days of Joshua, divided into the four…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2The first inhabitants - i. e. the first inhabitants of the holy land after the return from the captivity. They are enumerated under four heads: (1) Israelites, i. e. the mass of the laity, whether belonging to the ten tribes or the two; (2) priests; (3) Levites; and (4) the lowest order of the ministry, the Nethinims. These last, whose name is derived from a root “to give,” were a sort of sacred slaves - persons “given” to the Levites to perform the more…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-34The Chronicler explains how people and institutions returning from the exile in Babylon connected with the past. The Levites and priests are important in this summary of Israel. The Chronicler believes they were central to the nation's organization. They were vital to Israel's success as a nation with God as king. The Chronicler used ancient records from Moses and David (1 Chronicles 9:19–22) to describe each group's homeland and rank.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. the first inhabitants that dwelt in their possessions--This chapter relates wholly to the first returned exiles. The same division of the people into four classes was continued after, as before the captivity; namely, the priests, Levites, natives, who now were called by the common name of Israelites, and the Nethinims (Jos 9:27; Ezr 2:43…Read the comment
