Context of Psalms 45:7

5Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies; The peoples fall under You. 6Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions. 8All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia, Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad. 9Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women; At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.

Commentaries on Psalms 45:7

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Oil of gladness - As an evidence that all causes of mourning, sorrow, and death, were at an end; as in the state of mourning the ancients did not anoint themselves. I have mentioned above that the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews, Hebrews 1:8, Hebrews 1:9, quotes Psalm 45:6, Psalm 45:7, of this Psalm. I shall subjoin the substance of what I have written on these verses in that place: - Hebrews 1:8; Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever - If this be…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Thou lovest righteousness … - See this verse explained in the notes at Hebrews 1:9, where it is applied to the Messiah. The word “God” is rendered in the margin “O God”; “O God, thy God, hath anointed thee,” etc. According to this construction, the thought would be carried on which is suggested in Psalm 45:6, of a direct address to the Messiah as God. This construction is not necessary, but it is the most obvious one. The Messiah - the Lord Jesus - though…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 The throne of this almighty King is established for ever. While the Holy Spirit leads Christ's people to look to his cross, he teaches them to see the evil of sin and the beauty of holiness; so that none of them can feel encouragement to continue in sin. The Mediator is God, else he had been neither able to do the Mediator's work, nor fit to wear the Mediator's crown. God the Father, as his God in respect to his human nature and mediatorial…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-9The king is like a god among humans. God anointed him, gave him a powerful throne, and he delivers justice as he rules eternally. The writer of Hebrews uses Psalm 45:6–7 to describe Jesus, arguing that the Son is greater than the angels (Hebrews 1:8–9).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. As in Psa 45:6 the divine nature is made prominent, here the moral qualities of the human are alleged as the reason or ground of the mediatorial exultation. Some render "O God, thy God," instead of God, thy God--but the latter is sustained by the same form (Psa 50:7), and it was only of His human nature that the anointing could be predicated (compare Is 61:3). oil of gladness--or token of gladness, as used in feasts and other times of solemn joy…Read the comment
