Context of Numbers 25:7
5So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor.” 6And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; 8and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. 9And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

Commentaries on Numbers 25:7
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-15Verses 6-15 Phinehas, in the courage of zeal and faith, executed vengeance on Zimri and Cozbi. This act can never be an example for private revenge, or religious persecution, or for irregular public vengeance.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-9Phinehas, acting as a representative of the priestly family, killed Zimri and Cozbi with one thrust of a spear (25:7–8). The text likely suggests that they were engaged in sexual relations at that moment. Phinehas acted with zeal, which means strong passion to defend God’s honor. His action brought the plague to an end (25:1–3).Read the comment
