Context of Isaiah 22:17
15Thus says the Lord God of hosts: “Go, proceed to this steward, To Shebna, who is over the house, and say: 16‘What have you here, and whom have you here, That you have hewn a sepulcher here, As he who hews himself a sepulcher on high, Who carves a tomb for himself in a rock? Indeed, the Lord will throw you away violently, O mighty man, And will surely seize you. 18He will surely turn violently and toss you like a ball Into a large country; There you shall die, and there your glorious chariots Shall be the shame of your master’s house. 19So I will drive you out of your office, And from your position he will pull you down.

It is probable, however, that it was to Assyria. With a mighty captivity - Hebrew, גבר geber - Of a man,‘ or perhaps, O man.‘ If it means the captivity of a man,‘ the sense is, a strong, irresistible, mighty captivity where the word “man” is emphatic, and means such as a mighty man would make…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-25Verses 15-25 This message to Shebna is a reproof of his pride, vanity, and security; what vanity is all earthly grandeur, which death will so soon end! What will it avail, whether we are laid in a magnificent tomb, or covered with the green sod? Those who, when in power, turn and toss others, will be justly turned and tossed themselves. Eliakim should be put into Shebna's place. Those called to places of trust and power, should seek to God for grace to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-25Shebna and Eliakim were two royal officials in King Hezekiah’s court (see 2 Kings 18:18; 19:2). Shebna believed the Assyrians would surely kill him. So he planned for a well-decorated burial place (Isaiah 22:16). Although the rebuke of Shebna happened before Assyria’s siege of Jerusalem in 701 BC (see Isaiah 22:19–21; 36:3), it relates well to the warnings in 22:1–13 about the later Babylonian siege.Read the comment
