Context of Exodus 19:3
1In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2For they had departed from Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before the mountain. And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.

Commentaries on Exodus 19:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Moses went up unto God - It is likely that the cloud which had conducted the Israelitish camp had now removed to the top of Sinai; and as this was the symbol of the Divine presence, Moses went up to the place, there to meet the Lord. The Lord called unto him - This, according to St. Stephen, was the Angel of the Lord, Acts 7:38. And from several scriptures we have seen that the Lord Jesus was the person intended; see Clarke's note on Genesis 16:7; see…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Moses went up unto God - This seems to imply that the voice was heard by Moses as he was ascending the mount. House of Jacob - This expression does not occur elsewhere in the Pentateuch. It has a special fitness here, referring doubtless to the special promises made to the Patriarch.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3The house of Jacob … the sons of Israel: The connection between Jacob and the present generation showed that God’s work continued from the past to the present. The same family line was still part of God’s plan. God had kept all his promises up to that time. The promises he would make in the future would also be trustworthy.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-63-6. Moses went up unto God--the Shekinah--within the cloud (Ex 33:20; Joh 1:18). Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, &c.--The object for which Moses went up was to receive and convey to the people the message contained in these verses, and the purport of which was a general announcement of the terms on which God was to take the Israelites into a close and peculiar relation to Himself. In thus negotiating between God and His people, the highest…Read the comment
