Context of Psalms 39:13

11When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin, you consume their wealth like a moth— surely everyone is but a breath. 12“Hear my prayer, Lord, listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner, a stranger, as all my ancestors were. Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again before I depart and am no more.”

Commentaries on Psalms 39:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13O spare me - Take me not from this state of probation till I have a thorough preparation for a state of blessedness. This he terms recovering his strength - being restored to the favor and image of God, from which he had fallen. This should be the daily cry of every human spirit: Restore me to thine image, guide me by thy counsel, and then reeeive me to thy glory!Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13O spare me - The word used here - from שׁעה shâ‛âh - means “to look;” and then, in connection with the preposition, “to look away from;” and it here means, “Look away from me;” that is, Do not come to inflict death on me. Preserve me. The idea is this: God seemed to have fixed his eyes on him, and to be pursuing him with the expressions of his displeasure (compare Job 16:9); and the psalmist now prays that he would “turn away his eyes,” and leave him…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-13Verses 7-13 There is no solid satisfaction to be had in the creature; but it is to be found in the Lord, and in communion with him; to him we should be driven by our disappointments. If the world be nothing but vanity, may God deliver us from having or seeking our portion in it. When creature-confidences fail, it is our comfort that we have a God to go to, a God to trust in. We may see a good God doing all, and ordering all events concerning us; and a…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13Earlier, the psalmist asked God to stay close to him (Psalm 8:21–22). Now, he wants God to leave him alone. This is similar to how Job felt (Job 7:17–19).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-1312-13. Consonant with the tenor of the Psalm, he prays for God's compassionate regard to him as a stranger here; and that, as such was the condition of his fathers, so, like them, he may be cheered instead of being bound under wrath and chastened in displeasure.Read the comment
