Context of Psalms 84:9
7They are sustained as they travel along; each one appears before God in Zion. 8O Lord, sovereign God, hear my prayer! Listen, O God of Jacob! (Selah) O God, take notice of our shield! Show concern for your chosen king! 10Certainly spending just one day in your temple courts is better than spending a thousand elsewhere. I would rather stand at the entrance to the temple of my God than live in the tents of the wicked. 11For the Lord God is our sovereign protector. The Lord bestows favor and honor; he withholds no good thing from those who have integrity.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Behold, O God, our shield - We have no Protector but thee. Thou seest the deadly blows that are aimed at us; cover our souls; protect our lives! Look upon the face of thine anointed - Consider the supplications sent up by him whom thou hast appointed to be Mediator between thee and man - thy Christ. But some apply this to David, to Zerubbabel, to the people of Israel; and each has his reasons.Read the comment

The psalmist pleads love to God's ordinances. Let us account one day in God's courts better than a thousand spent elsewhere; and deem the meanest place in his service preferable to the…Read the comment
