Context of Psalms 47:5
3He subdued nations beneath us and countries under our feet. 4He picked out for us a special land to be a source of pride for Jacob, whom he loves. (Selah) God has ascended his throne amid loud shouts; the Lord has ascended his throne amid the blaring of ram’s horns. 6Sing to God! Sing! Sing to our king! Sing! 7For God is king of the whole earth! Sing a well-written song!

Commentaries on Psalms 47:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5God is gone up with a shout - Primarily, this may refer to the rejoicing and sounding of trumpets, when the ark was lifted up to be carried on the shoulders of the Levites. But it is generally understood as a prophetic declaration of the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ; and the shout may refer to the exultation of the evangelists and apostles in preaching Christ crucified, buried, risen from the dead, and ascended to heaven, ever to appear in the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5God is gone up with a shout - That is, he has ascended to heaven, his home and throne, after having secured the victory. He is represented as having come down to aid his people in the war by the overthrow of their enemies, and (having accomplished this) as returning to heaven, accompanied by his hosts, and amidst the shouts of triumph. All this is, of course, poetical, and is not to be regarded as literal in any sense. Compare the notes at Psalm 7:7. The…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-9Verses 5-9 Praise is a duty in which we ought to be frequent and abundant. But here is a needful rule; Sing ye praises with understanding. As those that understand why and for what reasons they praise God, and what is the meaning of the service. It is not an acceptable service, if it is not a reasonable service. We are never to forget the end of Messiah's exaltation, so continually do the prophets dwell upon the conversion of the nations to the gospel of…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-75-7. God, victorious over His enemies, reascends to heaven, amid the triumphant praises of His people, who celebrate His sovereign dominion. This sovereignty is what the Psalm teaches; hence he adds, sing ... praises with understanding--literally, "sing and play an instructive (Psalm)." The whole typifies Christ's ascension (compare Psa 68:18).Read the comment
