Context of Isaiah 37:16
14Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the Lord’s temple and spread it out before the Lord. 15Hezekiah prayed before the Lord: “O Lord who commands armies, O God of Israel, who is enthroned on the cherubim! You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the sky and the earth. 17Pay attention, Lord, and hear! Open your eyes, Lord, and observe! Listen to this entire message Sennacherib sent and how he taunts the living God! 18It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all the nations and their lands.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16O Lord of hosts - (See the note at Isaiah 1:9). That dwellest between the cherubims - On the cherubim, see the note at Isaiah 14:13. The reference here is doubtless to the fact that the symbol of the divine presence in the temple the Shechinah (from שׁכן shâkan to dwell, to inhabit; so called because it was the symbol of God‘s dwelling with his people or inhabiting the temple) - rested on the cover of the ark in the temple. They were formed out of the same mass of pure gold as the mercy seat itself (Ex 25:19, Margin). The phrase, "dwellest between the cherubim," arose from their position at each end of the…Read the comment
