Context of Ezra 6:3
1So Darius the king issued orders, and they searched in the archives of the treasury which were deposited there in Babylon. 2A scroll was found in the citadel of Ecbatana which is in the province of Media, and it was inscribed as follows: “Memorandum: In the first year of his reign, King Cyrus gave orders concerning the temple of God in Jerusalem: ‘Let the temple be rebuilt as a place where sacrifices are offered. Let its foundations be set in place. Its height is to be ninety feet and its width ninety feet, 4with three layers of large stones and one layer of timber. The expense is to be subsidized by the royal treasury. 5Furthermore let the gold and silver vessels of the temple of God, which Nebuchadnezzar brought from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, be returned and brought to their proper place in the temple in Jerusalem. Let them be deposited in the temple of God.’

Commentaries on Ezra 6:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3The height thereof threescore cubits - This was much larger than the temple of Solomon. This was sixty cubits high, and sixty cubits broad; whereas Solomon's was only twenty cubits broad, and thirty cubits high.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3It is difficult to reconcile the dimentions here with expressions in Zechariah Zechariah 4:10, Haggai Haggai 2:3, and even Ezra Ezra 3:12, which imply that the second temple was smaller than the first (compare 1 Kings 6:2). Perhaps the dimensions here are those which Cyrus required the Jews not to exceed.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3This decree is recorded in Ezra 1:2–4. The temple will be ninety feet high and ninety feet wide. The changes suggested in the New Living Translation note would align these measurements with Solomon’s temple (1 Kings 6:2, 17, 20). However, the larger measurements here might show the maximum size the Persians would finance.Read the comment
