Context of Exodus 14:17
15The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16And as for you, lift up your staff and extend your hand toward the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites may go through the middle of the sea on dry ground. And as for me, I am going to harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will come after them, that I may be honored because of Pharaoh and his army and his chariots and his horsemen. 18And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I have gained my honor because of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.” 19The angel of God, who was going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-20Verses 15-20 Moses' silent prayers of faith prevailed more with God than Israel's loud outcries of fear. The pillar of cloud and fire came behind them, where they needed a guard, and it was a wall between them and their enemies. The word and providence of God have a black and dark side toward sin and sinners, but a bright and pleasant side toward the people of the Lord. He, who divided between light and darkness, Ge 1:4, allotted darkness to the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17honor: The Hebrew word translated as honor (kabod) suggests weightiness, importance, and reality. It describes something solid and true. At the same time, he showed that the political, military, and material glory of one of the greatest human cultures was weak and temporary. It was only a thin covering that could not stand before him.Read the comment
