Context of Exodus 14:17
15The Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to break camp. 16As for you, lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. As for me, I am going to harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them, and I will receive glory by means of Pharaoh, all his army, and his chariots and horsemen. 18The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I receive glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.” 19Then the angel of God, who was going in front of the Israelite forces, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and stood behind them.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-20Verses 15-20 Moses' silent prayers of faith prevailed more with God than Israel's loud outcries of fear. The pillar of cloud and fire came behind them, where they needed a guard, and it was a wall between them and their enemies. The word and providence of God have a black and dark side toward sin and sinners, but a bright and pleasant side toward the people of the Lord. He, who divided between light and darkness, Ge 1:4, allotted darkness to the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17honor: The Hebrew word translated as honor (kabod) suggests weightiness, importance, and reality. It describes something solid and true. It is not just brightness or outward beauty. In this event, God showed that he is real and powerful. At the same time, he showed that the political, military, and material glory of one of the greatest human cultures was weak and temporary. It was only a thin covering that could not stand before him.Read the comment
