Context of Jeremiah 23:39
37Each of you should merely ask the prophet, ‘What answer did the Lord give you? Or what did the Lord say?’ 38But just suppose you continue to say, ‘The message of the Lord is burdensome.’ Here is what the Lord says will happen: ‘I sent word to you that you must not say, “The Lord’s message is burdensome.” But you used the words “The Lord’s message is burdensome” anyway. So I will carry you far off and throw you away. I will send both you and the city I gave to you and to your ancestors out of my sight. 40I will bring on you lasting shame and lasting disgrace which will never be forgotten!’”

Commentaries on Jeremiah 23:39
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39I will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you and the city - Dr. Blayney translates: - I will both take you up altogether, and will cast you off together with the city. Ye are a burden to me: but I will take you up, and then cast you off. I will do with you as a man weary with his burden will do; cast it off his shoulders, and bear it no more.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-40Verses 33-40 Those are miserable indeed who are forsaken and forgotten of God; and men's jesting at God's judgments will not baffle them. God had taken Israel to be a people near to him, but they shall now be cast out of his presence. It is a mark of great and daring impiety for men to jest with the words of God. Every idle and profane word will add to the sinner's burden in the day of judgment, when everlasting shame will be his portion.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 37-40What has the LORD spoken?: The Lord has decided to punish the people of Judah and remove false prophets. Any prophecy claiming otherwise is not from the Lord.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3939. I will ... forget you--just retribution for their forgetting Him (Ho 4:6). But God cannot possibly forget His children (Is 49:15). Rather for "forget" translate, "I will altogether lift you up (like a 'burden,' alluding to their mocking term for God's messages) and cast you off." God makes their wicked language fall on their own head [Calvin]. Compare Jr 23:36: "every man's word shall be his burden."Read the comment
