Context of Deuteronomy 7:25
23The Lord your God will give them over to you; he will throw them into a great panic until they are destroyed. 24He will hand over their kings to you and you will erase their very names from memory. Nobody will be able to resist you until you destroy them. You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent to the Lord your God. 26You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house and thereby become an object of divine wrath along with it. You must absolutely detest and abhor it, for it is an object of divine wrath.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 7:25
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25Thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them - Some of the ancient idols were plated over with gold, and God saw that the value of the metal and the excellence of the workmanship might be an inducement for the Israelites to preserve them; and this might lead, remotely at least, to idolatry. As the idols were accursed, all those who had them, or any thing appertaining to them, were accursed also, Deuteronomy 7:26.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25The silver or gold that is on them - The silver and gold with which the statues of the gods were overlaid. Paul is probably alluding to this command in Romans 2:22; and his accusation of the Jew thus shows that the prohibition of the text was very necessary. Lest thou be snared - As by the rich ephod made by Gideon: compare the marginal reference.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-26Verses 12-26 We are in danger of having fellowship with the works of darkness if we take pleasure in fellowship with those who do such works. Whatever brings us into a snare, brings us under a curse. Let us be constant to our duty, and we cannot question the constancy of God's mercy. Diseases are God's servants; they go where he sends them, and do what he bids them. It is therefore good for the health of our bodies, thoroughly to mortify the sin of our…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 25-26it is detestable to the LORD your God: Pagan worship denies God's uniqueness and rejects his demand for exclusive worship (5:7–9). The terrible and disgusting ceremonies often linked to pagan worship opposed God's holy nature. But Israel risked adopting similar beliefs and practices (12:31; 13:12–17). An Israelite who recognized or worshiped false gods committed treason against the Lord. In other words, that person was unfaithful to God as king. The only…Read the comment
