Context of 1 Kings 8:43
41“Foreigners, who do not belong to your people Israel, will come from a distant land because of your reputation. 42When they hear about your great reputation and your ability to accomplish mighty deeds, they will come and direct their prayers toward this temple. Then listen from your heavenly dwelling place and answer all the prayers of the foreigners. Then all the nations of the earth will acknowledge your reputation, obey you like your people Israel do, and recognize that this temple I built belongs to you. 44“When you direct your people to march out and fight their enemies, and they direct their prayers to the Lord toward his chosen city and this temple I built for your honor, 45then listen from heaven to their prayers for help and vindicate them.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 43That all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee - Solomon prays that the result of Yahweh‘s hearing the prayers of pagans addressed toward the temple may be the general conversion of the world to the worship of Him. Compare Psalm 96:1-13; Psalm 98:1-9. This house - literally, as in the margin. In Scripture, when God‘s Name is said to be “called upon” persons or things, it seems to be meant that God is really present in them, upholding them…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-53Verses 22-53 In this excellent prayer, Solomon does as we should do in every prayer; he gives glory to God. Fresh experiences of the truth of God's promises call for larger praises. He sues for grace and favour from God. The experiences we have of God's performing his promises, should encourage us to depend upon them, and to plead them with him; and those who expect further mercies, must be thankful for former mercies. God's promises must be the guide of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41-43Solomon wanted people who were not Israelites to respect the Lord and have a relationship with him. He understood that Israel needed to show the Lord's true nature to those not part of the covenant (see Genesis 12:7; Psalm 102:15; Habakkuk 2:14; Matthew 28:19).Read the comment
