Context of 1 Kings 8:43
41Foreigners, who do not belong to your people, the Israelites, will hear how great you are. Then they will come here from other countries far away. 42They will hear about you and your power to do great things. Then they will turn towards this temple and pray to you. When that happens, please hear them from your home in heaven. Please answer all the prayers of these foreign people. Then people from all the nations in the world will realize how great you are. They also will respect you and obey you, as your own people do. They will understand that this temple that I have built belongs to you. 44Sometimes, your people will go to fight against their enemies at the place where you have sent them. Then they may turn towards this city and pray to the Lord. This is the city that you have chosen for me to build the temple to give you honour. 45When they pray to you, please hear them from your home in heaven. Do what is right to help them win against their enemies.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 43That all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee - Solomon prays that the result of Yahweh‘s hearing the prayers of pagans addressed toward the temple may be the general conversion of the world to the worship of Him. Compare Psalm 96:1-13; Psalm 98:1-9. This house - literally, as in the margin. In Scripture, when God‘s Name is said to be “called upon” persons or things, it seems to be meant that God is really present in them, upholding them…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-53Verses 22-53 In this excellent prayer, Solomon does as we should do in every prayer; he gives glory to God. Fresh experiences of the truth of God's promises call for larger praises. He sues for grace and favour from God. The experiences we have of God's performing his promises, should encourage us to depend upon them, and to plead them with him; and those who expect further mercies, must be thankful for former mercies. God's promises must be the guide of…Read the comment

He understood that Israel needed to show the Lord's true nature to those not part of the covenant (see Genesis 12:7; Psalm 102:15; Habakkuk 2:14; Matthew 28:19).Read the comment
