Context of 1 Kings 14:21
19The rest of the events of Jeroboam’s reign, including the details of his battles and rule, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel. 20Jeroboam ruled for twenty-two years; then he passed away. His son Nadab replaced him as king. Now Rehoboam son of Solomon ruled in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king and he ruled for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the Lord chose from all the tribes of Israel to be his home. His mother was an Ammonite woman named Naamah. 22Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord. They made him more jealous by their sins than their ancestors had done. 23They even built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21On the age of Rehoboam at his accession, see 1 Kings 12:8 note. The 17 years of his reign must have been complete, or a little more than complete, if Abijam ascended the throne in the “eighteenth” year of Jeroboam 1 Kings 15:1.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-31Verses 21-31 Here is no good said of Rehoboam, and much said to the disadvantage of his subjects. On this alone may we depend; for this let us daily pray, in behalf of ourselves and all around us. The splendour of their…Read the comment
