Context of 1 Kings 13:16
14and took off after the prophet, whom he found sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, “Are you the prophet from Judah?” He answered, “Yes, I am.” 15He then said to him, “Come home with me and eat something.” But he replied, “I can’t go back with you or eat and drink with you in this place. 17For the Lord gave me strict orders, ‘Do not eat or drink there; do not go back the way you came.’” 18The old prophet then said, “I too am a prophet like you. An angel told me with the Lord’s authority, ‘Bring him back with you to your house so he can eat and drink.’” But he was lying to him.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 13:16
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-22Verses 11-22 The old prophet's conduct proves that he was not really a godly man. When the change took place under Jeroboam, he preferred his ease and interest to his religion. He took a very bad method to bring the good prophet back. It was all a lie. Believers are most in danger of being drawn from their duty by plausible pretences of holiness. We may wonder that the wicked prophet went unpunished, while the holy man of God was suddenly and severely…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-19The old prophet had his reasons for finding the man of God, but he lied about getting a message from God through an angel. It could not be either Iddo or Ahijah, for both were alive after the events here related. Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense--It was at one of the annual festivals. The king, to give interest to the new ritual, was himself the officiating priest. The altar and its accompaniments would, of course…Read the comment
