Context of 1 Kings 13:16
14Then he rode along the road to find God's servant. He found him as he was sitting under an oak tree. The old prophet asked him, ‘Are you the servant of God from Judah?’ He answered, ‘I am.’ 15The old prophet said to him, ‘Come to my home with me and eat some food.’ God's servant said, ‘I cannot go back with you. I cannot eat or drink anything with you in this place. 17The Lord commanded me, “You must not eat or drink anything there. You must not return home on the same road that you came on.” ’ 18The old prophet then said, ‘I am also a prophet, as you are. An angel gave me a message from the Lord. He said, “Bring the man back with you to your house. There, he can eat some food and drink some water.” ’ But what the old prophet said was a lie.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 13:16
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-22Verses 11-22 The old prophet's conduct proves that he was not really a godly man. When the change took place under Jeroboam, he preferred his ease and interest to his religion. He took a very bad method to bring the good prophet back. It was all a lie. Believers are most in danger of being drawn from their duty by plausible pretences of holiness. We may wonder that the wicked prophet went unpunished, while the holy man of God was suddenly and severely…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-19The old prophet had his reasons for finding the man of God, but he lied about getting a message from God through an angel. The man of God knew the old prophet's request went against God's instructions (1 Kings 13:8–10, 16–17; compare Galatians 1:8).Read the comment

It could not be either Iddo or Ahijah, for both were alive after the events here related. Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense--It was at one of the annual festivals. The king, to give interest to the new ritual, was himself the officiating priest. The altar and its accompaniments would, of course…Read the comment
