Context of 1 Chronicles 11:3
1All Israel joined David at Hebron and said, “Look, we are your very flesh and blood! 2In the past, even when Saul was king, you were Israel’s commanding general. The Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel; you will rule over my people Israel.’” When all the leaders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, David made an agreement with them in Hebron before the Lord. They anointed David king over Israel, just as the Lord had announced through Samuel. 4David and the whole Israelite army advanced to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). (The Jebusites, the land’s original inhabitants, lived there.) 5The residents of Jebus said to David, “You cannot invade this place!” But David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 11:3
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3David first became king of Judah in Hebron and ruled there for seven and a half years (1 Chronicles 3:4; 2 Samuel 5:5). The Chronicler does not include the details of that time (see 2 Samuel 2–4) and instead focuses on David’s 33 and a half years ruling the entire nation. This began with his agreement with all the elders of Israel at Hebron (see 2 Samuel 5:1–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-31Ch 11:1-3. David Made King. 1. Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron--This event happened on the death of Ish-bosheth (see on 2Sa 5:1). The convention of the estates of the kingdom, the public and solemn homage of the representatives of the people, and the repeated anointing of the new king in their presence and by their direction, seem to have been necessary to the general acknowledgment of the sovereign on the part of the nation…Read the comment
