Commentaries on Daniel 9:2

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I Daniel understood by books - The prophecy referred to here is found Jeremiah 25:12; Jeremiah 29:10. The people must have been satisfied of the Divine inspiration of Jeremiah, or his prophecies would not have been so speedily collected nor so carefully preserved. It appears that there was a copy of them then in Daniel's hands.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2I Daniel understood by books - By the sacred books, and especially by the writings of Jeremiah. It has been made a ground of objection to the genuineness of Daniel that he mentions “books” in this place (ספרים sephârı̂ym ) as if there were at that time a collection of the sacred books, or as if they had been enrolled together in a volume. The objection is, that the writer speaks as if the canon of the Scriptures was completed, or that he uses such…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2according … Jeremiah: Daniel likely had a copy of Jeremiah’s prophecies. the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years: Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 BC (see 2 Kings 25:8), and the first return happened in 538 BC. This was about 48 years later. They began rebuilding the city almost immediately (see Ezra 3:1–13; Isaiah 44:28), and the rebuilt temple was completed in 515 BC. This was about 71 years after its destruction (Ezra 6:15). Daniel might…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. understood by books--rather, "letters," that is, Jeremiah's letter (Jr 29:10) to the captives in Babylon; also Jr 25:11, 12; compare 2Ch 36:21; Jr 30:18; 31:38. God's promises are the ground on which we should, like Daniel, rest sure hope; not so as to make our prayers needless, but rather to encourage them.Read the comment
