Context of Psalms 84:8
6As they pass through a valley where balsam trees grow, they make it a place of springs. The early rains cover it with blessings. 7Their strength grows as they go along until each one of them appears in front of God in Zion. O Lord God, commander of armies, hear my prayer. Open your ears, O God of Jacob. Selah 9Look at our shield, O God. Look with favor on the face of your anointed one. 10One day in your courtyards is better than a thousand ⌞anywhere else⌟. I would rather stand in the entrance to my God’s house than live inside wicked people’s homes.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-12Verses 8-12 In all our addresses to God, we must desire that he would look on Christ, his Anointed One, and accept us for his sake: we must look to Him with faith, and then God will with favour look upon the face of the Anointed: we, without him, dare not show our faces. The psalmist pleads love to God's ordinances. Let us account one day in God's courts better than a thousand spent elsewhere; and deem the meanest place in his service preferable to the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-12The psalmist deeply longs for God's presence. He feels weak with longing as he thinks about the temple and the pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem (Psalm 84:1–7). He prays for himself and the community (Psalm 84:8–9). The end of the psalm (Psalm 84:10–12) shows that the temple represents God. The psalmist truly desires God's presence. He understands that God's goodness is better than life and that only God can grant his people favor and honor (Psalm 84:10–11).Read the comment
