Context of Micah 6:5
3“My people, what have I done to you? How have I tried your patience? Answer me! 4I brought you out of Egypt and freed you from slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to lead you. My people, remember what King Balak of Moab planned ⌞to do to you⌟ and how Balaam, son of Beor, responded to him. Remember ⌞your journey⌟ from Shittim to Gilgal so that you may know the victories of the Lord.” 6What should I bring when I come into the Lord’s presence, when I bow in front of the God of heaven? Should I bring him year-old calves as burnt offerings? 7Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams or with endless streams of olive oil? Should I give him my firstborn child because of my rebellious acts? Should I give him my young child for my sin?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted - He sent for Balaam to curse your fathers; but by my influence he was obliged to bless them. See Numbers 22 (note) and Numbers 23 (note), and the notes there, where this subject is largely considered. From Shittim unto Gilgal - From the encampment at Shittim, Numbers 25:1, on the way to that of Gilgal, Joshua 4:19. Balaam gave different answers in the interval between these places. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Remember now - The word translated now is a very tender one, like our “do now remember” or “do remember,” beseeching instead of commanding. Dionysius: “I might command, but I speak tenderly, that I may lead thee to own the truth.” “What Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him.” God did not only raise up Moses, Aaron, Miriam, out of their brethren, but He turned the curse of the alien Balaam into a blessing; and that, not…Read the comment

Shittim, east of the Jordan River, was Israel’s base camp before entering the promised land (see Numbers 25:1; Joshua 2:1; 3:1). The journey from there to…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. what Balak ... consulted--how Balak plotted to destroy thee by getting Balaam to curse thee (Nu 22:5). what Balaam ... answered--how the avaricious prophet was constrained against his own will, to bless Israel whom he had desired to curse for the sake of Balak's reward (Nu 24:9-11) [Maurer]. Grotius explains it, "how Balaam answered, that the only way to injure thee was by tempting thee to idolatry and whoredom" (Nu 31:16). The mention of "Shittim"…Read the comment
