Context of Luke 19:3
1Jesus was passing through Jericho. 2A man named Zacchaeus was there. He was the director of tax collectors, and he was rich. He tried to see who Jesus was. But Zacchaeus was a small man, and he couldn’t see Jesus because of the crowd. 4So Zacchaeus ran ahead and climbed a fig tree to see Jesus, who was coming that way. 5When Jesus came to the tree, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down! I must stay at your house today.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Who he was - Rather “what sort of person,” he was, or how he appeared. He had that curiosity which is natural to people to see one of whom they have heard much. It would seem, also, that in this case mere “curiosity” led to his conversion and that of his family. Compare 1 Corinthians 14:23-25. God makes use of every principle - of curiosity, or sympathy, or affection, or hope, or fear - to lead people in the way of salvation, and to impress truth on the…Read the comment
