Context of Joshua 13:2
1Joshua was old, near the end of his life. So the Lord said to him, “You are old, near the end of your life, and there is a lot of land left to be conquered. The land that is left includes all the districts that belong to the Philistines and Geshur. 3It extends from the Shihor River, east of Egypt, northward as far as the border of Ekron. This is considered to be Canaanite territory, even though there are five Philistine rulers over Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as the Avvim people 4in the south. This territory includes all the land of the Canaanites as well as Mearah which belongs to Sidon as far as Aphek, the Amorite border.

Commentaries on Joshua 13:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2The borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri - The borders of the Philistines may mean the land which they possessed on the sea-coast, southwest of the land of Canaan. There were several places named Geshuri, but that spoken of here was probably the region on the south of Canaan, towards Arabia, or towards Egypt. - Calmet. Cellarius supposes it to have been a country in the vicinity of the Amalekites.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2This and Joshua 13:3 name the still unconquered districts in the southern half of the land, Joshua 13:4-6 those in the north. Geshuri - A district on the south of Philistia, the inhabitants of which are again named in 1 Samuel 27:8; but are not to be confounded with the land of the Geshurites mentioned in Joshua 13:13; Joshua 12:5.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2The Philistines were part of the Sea Peoples who migrated from the Aegean region a few decades after Israel entered Canaan. They settled along the southwestern Mediterranean coast, west and southwest of Judah. They came from Caphtor or Crete (Deut 2:23; Amos 9:7). • These Geshurites were from a southern territory, not the northern Geshurites (compare Josh 12:5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2-62-6. This is the land that yet remaineth--that is, to be acquired. This section forms a parenthesis, in which the historian briefly notices the districts yet unsubdued; namely, first, the whole country of the Philistines--a narrow tract stretching about sixty miles along the Mediterranean coast, and that of the Geshurites to the south of it (1Sa 27:8). Both included that portion of the country "from Sihor, which is before Egypt," a small brook near…Read the comment
