Context of Job 22:7
5“Aren’t you really very wicked? Is there no end to your wrongdoing? 6For no reason you take your brothers’ goods as security for a loan and strip them of their clothes. You don’t even give a tired person a drink of water, and you take food away from hungry people. 8A strong person owns the land. A privileged person lives in it. 9You send widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans are broken.

Commentaries on Job 22:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou hast not given water - It was esteemed a great virtue in the East to furnish thirsty travelers with water; especially in the deserts, where scarcely a stream was to be found, and where wells were very rare. Some of the Indian devotees are accustomed to stand with a girbah or skin full of water, on the public roads, to give drink to weary travelers who are parched with thirst.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Thou hast not given water to the weary - That is, thou hast withheld the rites of hospitality - one of the most grievous offences which could be charged on an Arabian; compare the notes at Isaiah 21:14. In all the Oriental world, hospitality was regarded, and is still, as a duty of the highest obligation.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-14Verses 5-14 Eliphaz brought heavy charges against Job, without reason for his accusations, except that Job was visited as he supposed God always visited every wicked man. He charges him with oppression, and that he did harm with his wealth and power in the time of his prosperity.Read the comment
