Context of Job 22:7
5No! It is because you are a very wicked person. You have done too many evil things for anyone to count them. That is why he is punishing you. 6You took things from your friends when you lent money to them. You had no reason to do that. You even took away the only clothes that poor people were wearing. When you met people who were weak and tired, you did not give them any water to drink. You refused to feed hungry people. 8You were a powerful man, with land that belonged to you. People respected you. Your land gave you a good life. 9But you refused to help widows. You were cruel to children who have no family.

Commentaries on Job 22:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou hast not given water - It was esteemed a great virtue in the East to furnish thirsty travelers with water; especially in the deserts, where scarcely a stream was to be found, and where wells were very rare. Some of the Indian devotees are accustomed to stand with a girbah or skin full of water, on the public roads, to give drink to weary travelers who are parched with thirst.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Thou hast not given water to the weary - That is, thou hast withheld the rites of hospitality - one of the most grievous offences which could be charged on an Arabian; compare the notes at Isaiah 21:14. In all the Oriental world, hospitality was regarded, and is still, as a duty of the highest obligation.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-14Verses 5-14 Eliphaz brought heavy charges against Job, without reason for his accusations, except that Job was visited as he supposed God always visited every wicked man. He charges him with oppression, and that he did harm with his wealth and power in the time of his prosperity.Read the comment
