Context of Job 22:7
5Is not thy wickedness great? Neither is there any end to thine iniquities. 6For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, And stripped the naked of their clothing. Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. 8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; And the honorable man, he dwelt in it. 9Thou hast sent widows away empty, And the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Commentaries on Job 22:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou hast not given water - It was esteemed a great virtue in the East to furnish thirsty travelers with water; especially in the deserts, where scarcely a stream was to be found, and where wells were very rare. Some of the Indian devotees are accustomed to stand with a girbah or skin full of water, on the public roads, to give drink to weary travelers who are parched with thirst.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Thou hast not given water to the weary - That is, thou hast withheld the rites of hospitality - one of the most grievous offences which could be charged on an Arabian; compare the notes at Isaiah 21:14. In all the Oriental world, hospitality was regarded, and is still, as a duty of the highest obligation.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-14Verses 5-14 Eliphaz brought heavy charges against Job, without reason for his accusations, except that Job was visited as he supposed God always visited every wicked man. He charges him with oppression, and that he did harm with his wealth and power in the time of his prosperity.Read the comment
