Context of Jeremiah 25:12
10I will take from them the sounds of joy and happiness, the sounds of brides and grooms, the sound of mills, and the light of lamps. 11This whole land will be ruined and become a wasteland. These nations will serve the king of Babylon for 70 years. “When the 70 years are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation for their crimes, declares the Lord. I will turn Babylon into a permanent wasteland. 13I will bring on that land all the disasters I threatened to do to it, everything that Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations, everything written in this book. 14Many nations and great kings will make slaves of the people of Babylon, and I will pay them back for what they have done.”

Commentaries on Jeremiah 25:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12And that nation - ההוא הגוי haggoi hahu . Dr. Blayney contends that this should be translated his nation, and that ההוא hahu is the substantive pronoun used in the genitive case. It is certainly more clear and definite to read, "I will punish the king of Babylon, and His nation." Will make it perpetual desolations - See the note on Isaiah 13:19, where the fulfillment of this prophecy is distinctly marked.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The fixing of the time during which the Jewish captivity should last, would not only confirm the prophecy, but also comfort the people of God, and encourage faith and prayer. The ruin of Babylon is foretold: the rod will be thrown into the fire when the correcting work is done. When the set time to favour Zion is come, Babylon shall be punished for their iniquity, as other nations have been punished for their sins. Every threatening of the…Read the comment

In 539 BC, Cyrus the Persian conquered Babylon, and the people went into captivity. For centuries, many nations and great kings enslaved the Babylonians. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-381. fourth year of Jehoiakim--called the third year in Da 1:1. But probably Jehoiakim was set on the throne by Pharaoh-necho on his return from Carchemish about July, whereas Nebuchadnezzar mounted the throne January 21, 604 B.C.; so that Nebuchadnezzar's first year was partly the third, partly the fourth, of Jehoiakim's. Here first Jeremiah gives specific dates. Nebuchadnezzar had previously entered Judea in the reign of his father Nabopolassar.Read the comment
