Context of Isaiah 6:4
2Angels were standing above him. Each had six wings: With two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3They called to each other and said, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory.” Their voices shook the foundations of the doorposts, and the temple filled with smoke. 5So I said, “Oh, no! I’m doomed. Every word that passes through my lips is sinful. I live among people with sinful lips. I have seen the king, the Lord of Armies!” 6Then one of the angels flew to me. In his hand was a burning coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4And the posts of the door - Margin, Thresholds.‘ There is some difficulty in the Hebrew here, but the meaning of the expression is sufficiently apparent. It means that there was a tremour, or concussion, as if by awe, or by the sound attending the cry. It is evidently a poetic expression. The house - The temple. Was filled with smoke - There is here, doubtless, a reference to “the cloud” that is so often mentioned in the Old Testament as the visible…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-13Isaiah’s great vision of the Lord as King on his throne was a turning point in his life. This vision shaped his work as a prophet. Scholars understand the historical setting of this event in two main ways: Some see Isaiah 6 as Isaiah's original call to ministry. This would mean Isaiah 1–5 and 7–12 belong to the time of King Ahaz. Ahaz began to rule after King Uzziah died(Isaiah 6:1). If this is correct, Isaiah’s call did not appear at the beginning of the…Read the comment
