Context of Isaiah 22:11
9You will see how many places in David’s wall are broken. You will store water in the Lower Pool. 10You will count the houses in Jerusalem. You will tear down those houses in order to fortify the walls. You will build a reservoir between the two walls to hold the water of the Old Pool. You didn’t look to Jerusalem’s maker. You didn’t see the one who formed it long ago. 12On that day the Almighty Lord of Armies will call for crying and for mourning, for shaving your heads and for wearing sackcloth. 13Instead, you will rejoice, celebrate, slaughter cattle, and butcher sheep. You will eat meat, drink wine, and say, “Let’s eat and drink because tomorrow we’re going to die.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Unto the maker thereof "To him that hath disposed this" - That is, to God the Author and Disposer of this visitation, the invasion with which he now threatens you. The very same expressions are applied to God, and upon the same occasion, Isaiah 37:26; : - "Hast thou not heard of old, that I have disposed it; And of ancient times, that I have formed it?"Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Ye made also a ditch - That is, they made a “reservoir” to retain the water. The word ditch,‘ however, will well describe the character of the pool of Gihon on the west side of the city (see the notes at Isaiah 7:3). Between the two walls for the water of the old pool - Hezekiah built one of these walls himself (2 Chronicles 32:5, 2 Chronicles 32:30; compare 2 Kings 25:5, and Jeremiah 39:4). Between these two walls the water would be collected so as to be…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The weakness of Judah now appeared more than ever. Now also they discovered their carnal confidence and their carnal security. They looked to the fortifications. They made sure of water for the city. But they were regardless of God in all these preparations. They did not care for his glory in what they did. They did not depend upon him for a blessing on their endeavours. For every creature is to us what God makes it to be; and we must bless…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-11The people of Jerusalem prepared for war. They counted their weapons, inspected the city walls, and made sure they had enough water. However, they did not think about God’s plans (see Isaiah 13:1–14:23). They focused on their own efforts instead of seeking the Lord. King Hezekiah played an important role in these preparations. However, the verbs in this passage are plural. Isaiah was speaking to the people as a group, not only to Hezekiah. This is…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Ye made ... a ditch--rather, "Ye shall make a reservoir" for receiving the water. Hezekiah surrounded Siloah, from which the old (or king's, or upper) pool took its rise, with a wall joined to the wall of Zion on both sides; between these two walls he made a new pool, into which he directed the waters of the former, thus cutting off the foe from his supply of water also. The opening from which the upper pool received its water was nearer Zion than the…Read the comment
