Context of Isaiah 22:11
9You saw that there were many holes in the walls of the City of David. You stored water in the Lower Pool. 10You counted the houses in Jerusalem and you knocked down some of them. You used the stones to make the city's wall stronger. You built a place between the city's walls to store water from the Old Pool. But you did not trust the One who made the city. You did not think about the One who decided to build it a long time ago. 12At that time, the Lord Almighty told you to be very sad and weep. He told you to cut all the hair off your heads and to wear rough clothes. 13But instead, you are happy and you dance! You kill cows and sheep for a feast! You eat lots of meat and you drink lots of wine. You say, ‘We will have a big feast today, because tomorrow we will be dead!’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Ye made also a ditch - That is, they made a “reservoir” to retain the water. The word ditch,‘ however, will well describe the character of the pool of Gihon on the west side of the city (see the notes at Isaiah 7:3). Between the two walls for the water of the old pool - Hezekiah built one of these walls himself (2 Chronicles 32:5, 2 Chronicles 32:30; compare 2 Kings 25:5, and Jeremiah 39:4). Between these two walls the water would be collected so as to be…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The weakness of Judah now appeared more than ever. Now also they discovered their carnal confidence and their carnal security. They looked to the fortifications. They made sure of water for the city. But they were regardless of God in all these preparations. They did not care for his glory in what they did. They did not depend upon him for a blessing on their endeavours. For every creature is to us what God makes it to be; and we must bless…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-11The people of Jerusalem prepared for war. They counted their weapons, inspected the city walls, and made sure they had enough water. However, they did not think about God’s plans (see Isaiah 13:1–14:23). They focused on their own efforts instead of seeking the Lord. King Hezekiah played an important role in these preparations. However, the verbs in this passage are plural. Isaiah was speaking to the people as a group, not only to Hezekiah. This is…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Ye made ... a ditch--rather, "Ye shall make a reservoir" for receiving the water. Hezekiah surrounded Siloah, from which the old (or king's, or upper) pool took its rise, with a wall joined to the wall of Zion on both sides; between these two walls he made a new pool, into which he directed the waters of the former, thus cutting off the foe from his supply of water also. The opening from which the upper pool received its water was nearer Zion than the…Read the comment
