Context of Exodus 15:7

5The deep water covered them. They sank to the bottom like a rock. 6Your right hand, O Lord, wins glory because it is strong. Your right hand, O Lord, smashes your enemies. With your unlimited majesty, you destroyed those who attacked you. You sent out your burning anger. It burned them up like straw. 8With a blast from your nostrils, the water piled up. The waves stood up like a dam. The deep water thickened in the middle of the sea. 9“The enemy said, ‘I’ll pursue them! I’ll catch up with them! I’ll divide the loot! I’ll take all I want! I’ll use my sword! I’ll take all they have!’

Commentaries on Exodus 15:7

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7In the greatness of thine excellency - To this wonderful deliverance the Prophet Isaiah refers, Isaiah 63:11-14; : "Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he that put his Holy Spirit within him? That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? That led them…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-12The song speaks to the Lord in a personal way. It calls him You. This makes a strong contrast between the Lord and them, the enemies (15:7). The enemies had their own plans and desires, but their plans failed (15:9,10).Read the comment

They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out. But the line of the people would be extended during the passage, and one extremity of it would reach as far north as these…Read the comment
