Context of Deuteronomy 31:10
8The Lord is the one who is going ahead of you. He will be with you. He won’t abandon you or leave you. So don’t be afraid or terrified.” 9Moses wrote down these teachings and gave them to the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the Lord’s promise and to all the leaders of Israel. Then Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seventh year you must cancel debts. At that time, during the Festival of Booths, 11all the Israelites will come into the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose. Read these teachings so that they can hear them. 12Assemble the men, women, and children, as well as the foreigners who live in your cities. Have them listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and faithfully obey every word of these teachings.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10At the end of every seven years - thou shalt read this law - Every seventh year was a year of release, Deuteronomy 15:1, at which time the people's minds, being under a peculiar degree of solemnity, were better disposed to hear and profit by the words of God. I suppose on this ground also that the whole book of Deuteronomy is meant, as it alone contains an epitome of the whole Pentateuch. And in this way some of the chief Jewish rabbins understand this…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Though we read the word in private, we must not think it needless to hear it read in public. This solemn reading of the law must be done in the year of release. The year of release was typical of gospel grace, which is called the acceptable year of the Lord; for our pardon and liberty by Christ, engage us to keep his commandments. It must be read to all Israel, men, women, children, and to the strangers. It is the will of God that all people…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10The year of remission of debt was the seventh year of the calendar, not the seventh year of a specific transaction between people. All debts were cancelled, and Hebrew bond servants were released from their creditors (see 15:1–3). Feast of Tabernacles: People celebrated this feast in the seventh month each year (Hebrew Tishri, September/October). It celebrated God's miraculous protection of Israel in the wilderness. It also celebrated the fall harvest…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-139-13. And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests--The law thus committed to writing was either the whole book of Deuteronomy, or the important part of it contained between the twenty-seventh and thirtieth chapters. It was usual in cases of public or private contract for two copies of the engagement to be made--one to be deposited in the national archives or some secure place for reference, should occasion require. The other was to remain…Read the comment
