Context of Daniel 8:2
1In Belshazzar’s third year as king, I, Daniel, saw a vision. This vision came after the one I saw earlier. In my vision I saw myself in the fortress of Susa in the province of Elam. In my vision I saw myself at Ulai Gate. 3I looked up and saw a single ram standing beside the gate. The ram had two long horns, one longer than the other, though the longer one had grown up later. 4I saw the ram charging west, north, and south. No other animal could stand in front of it, and no one could escape from its power. It did anything it pleased and continued to grow.

Commentaries on Daniel 8:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I saw in a vision - Daniel was at this time in Shushan, which appears to have been a strong place, where the kings of Persia had their summer residence. It was the capital of the province of Elam or the Elymais; which province was most probably added to the Chaldean territories by Nebuchadnezzar; see Jeremiah 49:34, Jeremiah 49:35. Here was Daniel's ordinary residence; and though here at this time, he, in vision, saw himself on the banks of the river…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2And I saw in a vision - I looked as the vision appeared to me; or I saw certain things represented to me in a vision. On the word vision, see the notes at Daniel 1:17. The meaning here would seem to be that a vision appeared to Daniel, and that he contemplated it with earnestness, to understand what it meant. That I was at Shushan - As remarked in the introduction to this chapter, this might mean that he seemed to be there, or that the vision was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Susa was located in the lowlands southwest of the Zagros Mountains. It was one of Persia’s capital cities (compare Ezra 4:9; Nehemiah 1:1; Esther 1:2). Susa was a fortified capital with architecture decorated with glazed images of griffins (creatures with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle), winged bulls, and lions. The Ulai River was likely a human-made canal.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. Shushan--Susa. Though then comparatively insignificant, it was destined to be the capital of Persia after Cyrus' time. Therefore Daniel is transported into it, as being the capital of the kingdom signified by the two-horned ram (Ne 1:1; Es 1:2-5). Elam--west of Persia proper, east of Babylonia, south of Media. Daniel was not present there personally, but in vision. Ulai--called in Pliny Euloeus; by the Greeks, Choaspes. Now Kerah, or Karasu. So in Da…Read the comment
