Context of Daniel 8:2
1In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king, a vision appeared unto me, [even] to me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. And I saw in the vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was in the fortress of Shushan, which is in the province of Elam. And I saw in the vision, and I was by the river Ulai. 3And I lifted up mine eyes and saw, and behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns; and the two horns were high; and one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. 4I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward, and no beast could stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; and he did according to his will, and became great.

Commentaries on Daniel 8:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I saw in a vision - Daniel was at this time in Shushan, which appears to have been a strong place, where the kings of Persia had their summer residence. It was the capital of the province of Elam or the Elymais; which province was most probably added to the Chaldean territories by Nebuchadnezzar; see Jeremiah 49:34, Jeremiah 49:35. Here was Daniel's ordinary residence; and though here at this time, he, in vision, saw himself on the banks of the river…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2And I saw in a vision - I looked as the vision appeared to me; or I saw certain things represented to me in a vision. On the word vision, see the notes at Daniel 1:17. The meaning here would seem to be that a vision appeared to Daniel, and that he contemplated it with earnestness, to understand what it meant. That I was at Shushan - As remarked in the introduction to this chapter, this might mean that he seemed to be there, or that the vision was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Susa was located in the lowlands southwest of the Zagros Mountains. It was one of Persia’s capital cities (compare Ezra 4:9; Nehemiah 1:1; Esther 1:2). Susa was a fortified capital with architecture decorated with glazed images of griffins (creatures with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle), winged bulls, and lions. The Ulai River was likely a human-made canal.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. Shushan--Susa. Though then comparatively insignificant, it was destined to be the capital of Persia after Cyrus' time. Daniel was not present there personally, but in vision. Ulai--called in Pliny Euloeus; by the Greeks, Choaspes. Now Kerah, or Karasu. So in Da…Read the comment
