Context of Daniel 10:3
1In Cyrus’ third year as king of Persia, a message was revealed to Daniel (who had been renamed Belteshazzar). The message was true. It was about a great war. Daniel understood the message because he was given insight during the vision. 2During those days I, Daniel, mourned for three whole weeks. I didn’t eat any good-tasting food. No meat or wine entered my mouth. I didn’t wash myself until the entire three weeks were over. 4On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, I was by the great Tigris River. 5When I looked up, I saw a man dressed in linen, and he had a belt made of gold from Uphaz around his waist.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3I ate no pleasant bread - This fast was rather a general abstinence; living all the while on coarse and unsavory food; drinking nothing but water; not using the bath, and most probably wearing haircloth next the skin, during the whole of the time.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3I ate no pleasant bread - Margin, “bread of desires.” So the Hebrew. The meaning is, that he abstained from ordinary food, and partook of that only which was coarse and disagreeable. Neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth - That is, he lived on bread or vegetables. It is not to be inferred from this that Daniel ordinarily made use of wine, for it would seem from Matthew 6:17), and Daniel here says that he abstained during these three weeks from what he…Read the comment
