Context of 1 Samuel 10:5
3Keep going until you come to the oak tree at Tabor. There you will find three men on their way to worship God at Bethel: One will be carrying three young goats, one will be carrying three loaves of bread, and one will be carrying a ⌞full⌟ wineskin. 4They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you should accept from them. After that, you will come to the hill of God, where the Philistines have a military post. When you arrive at the city, you will meet a group of prophets prophesying as they come from the worship site. They will be led by men playing a harp, a tambourine, a flute, and a lyre. 6Then the Lord’s Spirit will come over you. You will be a different person while you prophesy with them. 7When these signs happen to you, do what you must, because God is with you.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Hill of God - Rather, “Gibeah” of God, and so in 1 Samuel 10:10. Two things are clear; “one” that Saul had got home when he got to Gibeah of God, for there he found his uncle, and no further journeying is so much as hinted at, and the same word “Gibeah” describes his home at 1 Samuel 10:26. The “other” that there was a high place at Gibeah just above the city, from which he met the company of prophets “coming down.” Hence, it is obvious to conclude that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Gibeah of God, Saul’s hometown (1 Samuel 10:26), was once a lawless city (Judges 19–21). It is not described elsewhere as "of God." This might suggest God's claim over the town, even though the Philistines occupied it. group: Prophets often lived in groups (for example, 2 Kings 2:3) harps … lyres: Ancient prophets sometimes used musical instruments to inspire and support their prophesying (for example, 2 Kings 3:15).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. the hill of God--probably Geba (1Sa 13:3), so called from a school of the prophets being established there. The company of prophets were, doubtless, the pupils at this seminary, which had probably been instituted by Samuel, and in which the chief branches of education taught were a knowledge of the law, and of psalmody with instrumental music, which is called "prophesying" (here and in 1Ch 25:1, 7).Read the comment
