Context of 1 Kings 12:21
19Israel has rebelled against David’s dynasty to this day. 20When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent men to invite him to the assembly. They made him king of all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to David’s dynasty. When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he gathered all the people of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 of the best soldiers, to fight against the people of Israel and return the kingdom to Rehoboam, son of Solomon. 22But God spoke his word to Shemaiah, the man of God. He said, 23“Speak to Judah’s King Rehoboam, son of Solomon, and all the people of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 12:21
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21The adhesion of Benjamin to Judah at this time comes upon us as a surprise. By blood Benjamin was far more closely connected with Ephraim than with Judah. All the traditions of Benjamin were antagonistic to Judah, and hitherto the weak tribe had been accustomed to lean constantly on its strong northern neighhour. But it would seem that, in the half-century which had elapsed since the revolt of Sheba, the son of Bichri 2 Samuel 20:1, the feelings of the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-24Verses 16-24 The people speak unbecomingly of David. How soon are good men, and their good services to the public, forgotten ! These considerations should reconcile us to our losses and troubles, that God is the Author of them, and our brethren the instruments: let us not meditate revenge. Rehoboam and his people hearkened to the word of the Lord. When we know God's mind, we must submit, how much soever it crosses our own mind. If we secure the favour of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-24Rehoboam wanted to regain control of the kingdom by force, but he changed his mind after hearing God's message through Shemaiah. The phrase man of God highlights a prophet's role as God's messenger. Prophets were important in the history of the divided kingdom. Shemaiah likely wrote a history of Rehoboam’s reign (2 Chronicles 12:15).Read the comment

Rehoboam determined to assert his authority by leading a large force into the disaffected provinces. But the revolt of the ten tribes was completed when the prophet Shemaiah ordered, in the Lord's name, an abandonment of any hostile measures against the revolutionists. The army…Read the comment
