Context of 1 Chronicles 21:26
24“No,” King David told Ornan, “I insist on buying it for the full price. I won’t take what is yours for the Lord and offer burnt sacrifices that cost me nothing.” 25So David gave Ornan 15 pounds of gold for that place. David built an altar for the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him by ⌞sending⌟ fire from heaven on the altar for burnt offerings. 27So the Lord spoke to the Messenger, and he put his sword back in its scabbard. 28At that time, when David saw the Lord had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26He answered him from heaven by fire - This fact is not mentioned by the author of Samuel, since his object is to give an account of the sin of David, its punishment, and the circumstances by which that punishment was brought to a close, not to connect those circumstances with anything further in the history. With the writer of Chronicles the case is different. He would probably have omitted the whole narrative, as he did the sin of David in the matter of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26-30The census and plague led to dedicating Araunah’s threshing floor as the site for the new sanctuary. The plague stopped at the threshing floor, allowing David to make offerings there as instructed by Gad the seer (1 Chronicles 21:18).
