Context of Psalms 78:7
5He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, 6that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; 8and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. 9The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7That they might set their hope in God - That they might place confidence in God; that they might maintain their allegiance to him. The object was to give such exhibitions of his character and government as to inspire just confidence in him, or to lead people to trust in him; and not to trust in idols and false gods. All the laws which God has ordained are such as are suited to inspire confidence in him as a just and righteous ruler; and all his dealings…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8God holds each generation responsible for its own actions. They should maintain faith and hope (see Psalm 9:18; 27:14) and avoid being stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful (see Deuteronomy 9:6–7; 10:16; 30:6; 31:27).Read the comment
