Context of Psalms 78:7
5He established a testimony in Jacob and set up a law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach to their children 6so that a future generation — children yet to be born — might know. They were to rise and tell their children so that they might put their confidence in God and not forget God’s works, but keep his commands. 8Then they would not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not loyal and whose spirit was not faithful to God. 9The Ephraimite archers turned back on the day of battle.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7That they might set their hope in God - That they might place confidence in God; that they might maintain their allegiance to him. The object was to give such exhibitions of his character and government as to inspire just confidence in him, or to lead people to trust in him; and not to trust in idols and false gods. All the laws which God has ordained are such as are suited to inspire confidence in him as a just and righteous ruler; and all his dealings…Read the comment
