Context of Zechariah 14:4
2I will bring soldiers from all countries to fight against Jerusalem. They will go into the city and they will rob the houses. They will have sex with the women. They will lead away half the people to other countries. They will let the other half stay in Jerusalem. 3Then the Lord will go out. And he will fight against the people from those countries as in past years. On that day, the Lord's feet will stand on the Mount of Olives. This mountain is east of Jerusalem. It will break in two from east to west and it will make a wide valley. Half of the mountain will move north and half of the mountain will move south. 5In the time of Uzziah, king of Judah, you ran away when the earth moved. You will do this again. Then the Lord will come. And all those who are holy will come with him. 6On that day, it will not be light in some places and dark in other places.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4And his feet shall stand - He shall appear in full possession of the place, as a mighty conqueror. And the mount of Olives shall cleave - God shall display his miraculous power as fully in the final restoration of the Jews, as he did when he divided the Red Sea that their forefathers might pass through dry-shod. Some refer this to the destruction of the city by the Romans. It was on the mount of Olives that Titus posted his army to batter Jerusalem. Here…Read the comment

It rises 187 feet above Mount Zion, 295 feet above Mount Moriah, 443 feet above Gethsemane, and lies…Read the comment

After this, angels told the disciples of Jesus that he would return in the same way they had seen him go (Acts 1:11–12). The prophet Zechariah describes an earthquake that will split the Mount of Olives in two. This will create a valley running east and west. The valley will give the Hebrews an escape route when the nations attack Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:5). Many Christians connect this event with the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. The object of the cleaving of the mount in two by a fissure or valley (a prolongation of the valley of Jehoshaphat, and extending from Jerusalem on the west towards Jordan, eastward) is to open a way of escape to the besieged (compare Joe 3:12, 14). Half the divided mount is thereby forced northward, half southward; the valley running between. The place of His departure at His ascension shall be the place of His return: and the "manner" of His return…Read the comment
