Context of Psalms 80:16
14Come back to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see what is happening! Take care of your special vine. 15You planted it with your own right hand. You caused it to grow, like a strong son. But now the enemy has cut down your vine, and they have burned it with fire. Show them that you are angry with them, and destroy them! 17Give strength to the one who sits at your right hand. He is the man that you have chosen to serve you. 18Then we will never turn away from you. Give to us new life and strength, so that we may always worship you.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16It is burned with fire - That is, the vineyard. This is a description of the desolations that had come upon the nation, such as would come upon a vineyard if it were consumed by fire. It is cut down - It has been made desolate by fire and by the axe. They perish at the rebuke of thy countenance - At the frown on thy face, as if God has only to look upon people in anger, and they perish. The word they refers to those who were represented by the vine which…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-16Verses 8-16 The church is represented as a vine and a vineyard. The root of this vine is Christ, the branches are believers. The church is like a vine, needing support, but spreading and fruitful. If a vine do not bring forth fruit, no tree is so worthless. And are not we planted as in a well-cultivated garden, with every means of being fruitful in works of righteousness? But the useless leaves of profession, and the empty boughs of notions and forms…Read the comment
