Context of Psalms 75:7
5Do not boast against God. Do not speak with such proud words.’ 6Who has the power to judge people? Nobody from the east, or from the west, or from the desert can be judge. God is the one who judges people. He decides who to bring down and who to lift up. 8The Lord holds a cup of punishment in his hand. It is full of wine, with spices in it. The Lord pours out his anger from this cup. All the wicked people in the world will have to drink it. They will drink all of it, so that none remains. 9But as for me, I will always thank you, God. I will sing to praise you, the God of Jacob.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7But God is the judge - All depends on him, not on the natural advantages of a country; not on human strength, human skill, or human prowess. Whatever may be the natural resources of a country; whatever may be the enterprise, the numbers, or the valor of its inhabitants; whatever alliances of peace or war they may form with other nations, yet success depends on God. He presides over all; he can give success when it is least expected; and he also can humble…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-10Verses 6-10 No second causes will raise men to preferment without the First Cause. It comes neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. He mentions not the north; the same word that signifies the north, signifies the secret place; and from the secret of God's counsel it does come. From God alone all must receive their doom. There are mixtures of mercy and grace in the cup of affliction, when it is put into the hands of God's people…Read the comment
