Context of Psalms 69:6
4Very many people hate me with no good reason. They are more than the number of hairs on my head! My enemies are too strong for me. They want to destroy me with their lies. They make me give back to them things that I did not take from them! 5You know, God, that I do foolish things. I cannot hide my sins from you. My Lord, Almighty Lord, Israel's God, do not let anyone who trusts you become ashamed because of me. Do not let anyone who serves you become ashamed because of me. 7Because I belong to you, people insult me. They make me feel ashamed. 8I have become like a stranger to my brothers. I am like a foreigner to my family.

Commentaries on Psalms 69:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Be ashamed for my sake - The sins of the Jews were a great stumbling-block in the way of the conversion of the Gentiles. They had been the peculiar people of the Lord. "How," say the Gentiles, "can a pure and holy Being love such people?" They were now punished for their crimes. "How," say the Gentiles, "can God deal so hardly with those whom he professes to love?" The pious among the captives felt keenly, because this reproach seemed to fall upon their…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Let not them that wait on thee - Those who worship thee; those who are thy true friends. True piety is often, in the Scriptures, represented as waiting on the Lord. See Psalm 25:3, Psalm 25:5; Psalm 37:9; Isaiah 40:31. Be ashamed for my sake - On account of me; or, in consequence of what I do. Let me not be suffered to do anything that would make them ashamed of me, or ashamed to have it known that I belong to their number. I know that I am a sinner; I…Read the comment
