Context of Psalms 69:4
2I will soon sink into deep mud. There is no safe place to put my feet. I am now in deep water, and the floods pour over me. 3I have shouted so much for help that I am tired and weak. My mouth is so dry that it hurts. I have looked so long for help from you, my God, that my eyes have become weak. Very many people hate me with no good reason. They are more than the number of hairs on my head! My enemies are too strong for me. They want to destroy me with their lies. They make me give back to them things that I did not take from them! 5You know, God, that I do foolish things. I cannot hide my sins from you. 6My Lord, Almighty Lord, Israel's God, do not let anyone who trusts you become ashamed because of me. Do not let anyone who serves you become ashamed because of me.

Commentaries on Psalms 69:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Then I restored that which I took not away - I think, with Calmet, that this is a sort of proverbial expression, like such as these, "Those who suffered the wrong, pay the costs." Delirant reges, plectuntur Achivi. "Kings sin, and the people are punished." "The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge." Our fathers have grievously sinned against the Lord, and we their posterity suffer for it. See on Psalm 69:12; (note)…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4They that hate me without a cause - Without any just reason; without any provocation on my part. There were many such in the case of David, for to those who rose up against him in the time of Saul, and to Absalom also, he had given no real occasion of offence. An expression similar to the one used here occurs in Psalm 35:19. See the notes at that passage. The “language” is applied to the Saviour John 15:25, not as having had original reference to him, but…Read the comment
