Context of Psalms 55:13
11They destroy everything! In all the city's streets, they move freely. They hurt people and they cheat them. 12But it is not my enemies that have insulted me. That would not have hurt me. If my enemy laughs at me, I can always hide from him! But it is you, my best friend! We did things as men together, and I trusted you! 14We enjoyed our time together. We often went to God's temple, and we joined with the crowd of people there. 15Please let death suddenly destroy my enemies! May they go down into their graves alive! They are at home with evil, and that is all that they think about.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13But it was thou, a man mine equal - Margin, “a man according to my rank.” Septuagint, ̓́ isopsuche equal-souled, like-souled, “second self” (Thompson); Vulgate, “unanimus,” of the same mind; Luther, “Geselle,” companion. The Hebrew word used here - ערך ‛êrek - means properly a row or pile, as of the showbread piled one loaf on another, Exodus 40:23; then it would naturally mean one of the same row or pile; of the same rank or condition. The word also…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 No wickedness so distresses the believer, as that which he witnesses in those who profess to be of the church of God. Let us not be surprised at the corruptions and disorders of the church on earth, but long to see the New Jerusalem. He complains of one that had been very industrious against him. God often destroys the enemies of the church by dividing them. And an interest divided against itself cannot long stand. The true Christian must…Read the comment
