Context of Psalms 51:9
7Splash water over me with a hyssop plant, and I will be really clean. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow. 8Please forgive me so that I can be happy. Then my whole body will feel well again. Hide your face from my sins. Clean away all the bad things that I have done. 10God, please make my heart new and clean. And make my spirit strong and true, deep inside me. 11Do not send me away from you. Do not take your Holy Spirit away from me.

Commentaries on Psalms 51:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Hide thy face from my sins - The sentiment here is nearly the same as that in Psalm 51:3; : His sin was ever before his own face; and he knew that the eye of God was constantly upon him, and that his purity and justice must be highly incensed on the account. He therefore, with a just horror of his transgressions, begs God to turn away his face from them, and to blot them out, so that they may never more be seen. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Hide thy face from my sins - That is, Do not look on them; avert thy face from them; do not regard them. Compare the notes at Psalm 13:1. And blot out all mine iniquities - Take them entirely away. Let the account be erased, cancelled, destroyed. See the notes at Psalm 51:1.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-15Verses 7-15 Purge me with hyssop, with the blood of Christ applied to my soul by a lively faith, as the water of purification was sprinkled with a bunch of hyssop. The blood of Christ is called the blood of sprinkling, He 12:24. If this blood of Christ, which cleanses from all sin, cleanse us from our sin, then we shall be clean indeed, He 10:2. He asks not to be comforted, till he is first cleansed; if sin, the bitter root of sorrow, be taken away, he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-19This heartfelt prayer for restoration seeks God's favor, mercy, forgiveness, and cleansing. With a broken spirit, the psalmist admits his sin and takes responsibility (Psalm 51:3–6). He then asks God to remove his guilt and renew him internally (Psalm 51:7–12). The psalmist commits again to living wisely and joyfully while serving God and others (Psalm 51:13–17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 7-127-12. A series of prayers for forgiveness and purifying. Purge ... hyssop--The use of this plant in the ritual (Ex 12:22; Nu 19:6, 18) suggests the idea of atonement as prominent here; "purge" refers to vicarious satisfaction (Nu 19:17-20).Read the comment
